Joe's Writing Background

Zlomek has been a freelance writer and photographer since 1971. His work has been published in major magazines and trade periodicals in the U.S. and internationally, and on the Web. He specializes in writing about real estate issues, technology-based industries, business marketing, mass media, and digital video production.

Zlomek spent 12 years in newspaper management with privately owned Ingersoll Publishing Co. and its successor, Goodson Newspaper Group (now the publicly traded Journal Register Company). During his Ingersoll-Goodson tenure, Zlomek was publisher, chief operating officer (COO) and editor of The Mercury, Pottstown, PA (1989-1991); publisher and COO of The Observer, Toms River, NJ (1989); publisher, COO and executive editor of The Tribune-Star, Terre Haute, IN (1984-1989); general manager and designer of the Herald-News and Sunday Herald-News, Fall River, MA (1983-1984); and publisher, COO and editor of the Daily Dispatch, Oneida, NY (1979-1983).

Before his management career, Zlomek served in various capacities with daily and weekly newspapers in central New York as reporter, photographer and/or editor. He is a 1977 graduate of Syracuse University (Utica College division) with a BA in Journalism and a minor in public relations.

Awards, Prizes And Honors

During his tenure at The Mercury, Zlomek edited a series of editorials about open space and smart growth that won the newspaper, and former Editorial Writer Thomas Hylton, the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing. Those editorials later developed into Hylton's first book,"Save Our Land, Save Our Towns," (R&D Publications, 1995) for which Zlomek was among several first-read editors.

Zlomek also was the 1981 International Award Winner for News Photography presented by the International Association of Firefighters.

In addition, Zlomek has won several local and regional journalism awards. Since 1988 he has been an active member of the Society of Professional Journalists and its Philadelphia chapter, and proudly adheres to its Code of Ethics.
